Monday, April 18, 2011 at 8:51PM This is a legit movie by Lars von Trier. It's set in a surreal post war Germany on a train with plenty of tension and suspense. The whole thing is black and white with splashed of color effect thrown in, lots of scenes in front of pre recorded backgrounds so there's a weird visual effect through the whole movie. Directing is great, every little trick from Hitchcock and Orson Welles is thrown in there. The music is awesome at creating an eerie, tense vibe. The whole thing is a little be long/slow but it fits the movie. This makes you feel like you're watching a real movie. It's what I would have liked, something like Tarantino's Inglorious Bastards to be closer to, it's something completely new and original but clearly pulls out every trick in the noir/WW2 suspense genre, making the ultimate parody/homage/example of the genre. If you'd like to see a Kafka novel filmed like Citizen Kane than this is the movie for you. Only a little more blood and maybe explicit sex scenes like von Triers later movies would make this better. (.95)
