Wednesday, August 24, 2011 at 11:24AM I was just up at Funspot and the original Galaga is still legit, a couple steps past Space Invaders with better color, graphics, sound, and more action with the aliens coming at you. Pretty standard stuff and the original has the bonus of being rad just cause it's old school and gets some respect. It's been ported out on nearly every system and can be downloaded on most phones. Here's the issue, play the original for nostalgia and it's awesome, play the original cause it's really basic and fun and it's awesome, play any sequels or reboots and it's a waste. The newest is Galaga Legions DX for the 360 and PS3. Yes everything is pretty and it looks great but it's way too easy and there's no sense of imminent death coming at you. The newer versions of Galaga sometimes show the path of the aliens that are coming which is a nice touch but I played Legions DX for almost a half hour before I actually had to pay attention and start moving the ship around. The modernizations have never had the impact or splash of the original and for me even the original wasn't quite as impressive as the games that bookended it - Space Invaders and Pac-Man. It's a must play but mainly out of respect for history. (.75)
